I would love to take this time to share 3 unique different games that each fill different roles and I absolutely could, but there’s a trilogy that requires all 3 to work that fits this so well I have no choice, and I’ve mentioned them before. It can be the multiplayer party favorite, your dedicated fighter, or your first steps to a new genre before switching to a more traditional fighter. Ultimately (heh), Smash is just that more flexible in how you want to approach it. I thought about putting Street Fighter V in here because I want everyone to try a fighting game even for just a little while, but I'm still not sure how accessible fighting games are. Just a really fun game, and I wasn't prepared for how thoughtful, inspiring, and life-affirming it can be. This is IMO one of the best platforming games of all time, and is as accessible or as challenging as you want it to be.

I'm recommending this with the assumption that I don't have to recommend Mario (because Mario is Mario). That being said, there's Journey, Wide Ocean Big Jacket, or What Remains of Edith Finch as alternatives in light of the tragic circumstances.Ĭeleste. Very few games feel as tender to me as this one. I remain uncomfortable with the emotional abuse uncovered in the underbelly of this game, but I have to recognize its warmth.
